Homemade DIY cleaning products

DIY Cleaning Products

With the whole COVID-19 pandemic hitting us, I’m sure you are also struggling to find some necessities to keep yourself safe and home clean. I knew about toilet paper being difficult to get my hands on but I was also having a hard time finding hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. I found DIY cleaning products a good way to go!

So I looked up some recipes and tried them out and found that these were great DYI cleaning products that you can make at home using a lot of products that you can find at home and products that aren’t likely to sell out at supermarkets and drug stores during this pandemic.

homemade hand sanitizer

This is a simple recipe that you can find almost anywhere and make with very simple easy to get ingredients.

What you need:

DIY cleaning products to keep your family safe and healthy during this COVID-19 pandemic
  • 3/4 cup of 99% isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol)
  • 1/4 cup of aloe vera
  • 10-15 drops of essential oils

You want to make sure that the concentration of alcohol is at least 60% in your recipe or you won’t have enough sanitizing power to kill harmful germs. This ratio will maintain alcohol concentration at 60% when using 99%.

The aloe vera serves to soothe your hands and protects your skin from the harshness of the alcohol. For this reason, it is important to maintain the ratio as too high of a concentration of alcohol can be harmful to your skin.

You do not need to add essential oil but it helps. I liked using tea tree (also provides antibacterial and antifungal properties) but some other ones are lavender, frankincense (great for the skin), eucalyptus and peppermint.

Once you’ve mixed the ingredients, put the mix into a dispenser bottle for use. Make sure that it is clearly labeled. Simple DIY hand sanitizer!

homemade and reusable cleaning wipes

This recipe is one of my favorites, it is not only homemade but great on the environment as the wipes are reusable! You can make it using paper towels also but I like things that are good for the environment!

This recipe comes from One Good Thing, check out her website for other great DIYs!

What you need:

  • 2 cups of distilled water (special filtered water that decreases mold and mildew growth)
  • 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol (99% concentration)
  • 1 tsp of dish soap (One Good Thing recommends Dawn dish soap)
  • 20 drops of essential oils
  • Quartz size mason jar
  • cut clean cloths or rags to fill the jar

Add all the liquid ingredients into the mason jar and with the cap on, give it a good mix. Then add the clean clothes into the mason jar. Once the jar is full, cap it and leave it upside down so the cleaning mix saturates all the cloths. Simple DIY!

I hope these DIY help you keep you and your family safe and healthy during this COVID-19 pandemic. Remember prevention is key! If you want the 411 on the COVID-19 pandemic check out my post, here.

  1. Thank you Grace, you’re blogs are a great source of helpful hints especially for young Moms. I use Young Living Essential oils for both personal and cleaning benefits. Thieves is one of my favorites, It both sanitizes and cleans all surfaces. I use it diluted and full strength! And like you I use Vinegar and Rubbing Oil and Hand Sanitizers.

Essentials oils are fantastic for everyday health and can be appied Topically and for Diffusing which provides so many healthful benefits!

I love the new Plus Line, Dietary Essential Oils that are perfect for Culinary use.
